It's from her spring 2008 collection.
After finishing the dress, I decided the elasto-waist must go (shortened front waistband by 2 inches to accommodate this change).
Added 2 inches to the hem and left it loose (not bubbled as in pattern). My cheat for a full bust alteration was to add 1 inch to the length of the bodice. The little knots in the neckline will not stay centered unless they are tacked down, FYI.
Fabric is 'rich green' silk crepe de chine from NYFashionCenterFabrics.com; lining is Ambiance rayon in 'kiwi.'
The author warns against this project if you are a beginner, and I would definitely agree. The underarm gussets are deceivingly tricky to sew. The sleeves are cut on the bias and get a bit floppy without stabilization (ask me how I know!).
I really like this book; the styles are cool, the instructions are clear (just words, no illustrations), but I had some challenges:
Sizing: This is a size 4. Keep in mind, the book's size chart roughly corresponds to the the finished garment measurements, NOT your body measurements. To figure your size, add a couple inches of ease to your body measurements, then select the size based on this number. The only way to know this information is if you read the accompanying paragraphs of text on the page with the size chart, which I did not do ( I chose a size 4, though I should be a 6). Luckily, this is not a very form fitting pattern.
Printing: The patterns in the book come on a CD in Adobe .pdf and Illustrator formats to print out at home on regular office paper (or at a copy shop on large paper). The patterns range from 0-16, which is great, but only every other size is included. If you are a 6, for example, you will need to print out sizes 4 and 8, then overlay them to trace off the right size. That's a lot of paper (49*2 = 98 pages for this dress alone).
Also, the individual pages have match marks in each corner to aid in assembly after printing. I, however, could not get the .pdf file to print correctly, so the pages had only one or two corners having match marks. I even downloaded a free trial of Illustrator to try to get the other file type to print properly to no avail. I ended up opening the .pdf pages individually in Photoshop, copied and pasted them together, then printed them with a border that I set the dimensions of. To boot, there is no test square as there is with BurdaStyle printable patterns to make sure you have printed at the correct scale. I made my own test square in Photoshop before printing.
To sum up, printing the patterns from this book is a real fun-killer.
I really like these other projects from the book though:
I like how the projects are styled with other Twinkle by Wenlan pieces (jewelry, scarves, and RTW):
The garments with sleeves all have raglan, dropped shoulders, making them easier to fit and sew than traditional set-in sleeves. Some of the garments are not suitable for a large bust, like that green/white tank above (the author suggests a tank underneath), but you could take the ideas and details presented and adapt them to a different pattern.
All-in-all, I think this is a great book, especially for fans of Chia's RTW line, Twinkle by Wenlan. I have tremendous respect for designers that share their designs with home sewers. Thank you Wenlan!

Cute dress, love the changes that you made! Thanks for the book review, you're the second this week to mention it, so it must be interesting!
ReplyDeleteAbsolutely gorgeous! I'm so jealous - I keep seeing great things from this book but as a novice I'm staying away for now...
ReplyDeleteThe dress looks so good, especially those scallops, which I find difficult to get just so. You're right, it is better without the elastic, good eye! I'll have to see if I can find this book around town, it looks really cool.
ReplyDeleteYour dress looks gorgeous in that colour and I love the changes you made to the pattern. I also have this book and just can't stop looking through it! All the designs are so beautiful. I have the origami blouse pattern all ready to go but after all the printing and sticking I needed a rest!
ReplyDeleteThe dress is amazing, i love the color you chose. Well, green is my favorite color for dresses. My hearts almost stoped for a few seconds when i saw this dress!
ReplyDeleteI love your dress and the changes you made ^^
ReplyDeleteHello, I'm about to cut out this dress, and really appreciate your refinements. A favor to ask: could you please post a clear photo of the underarm gusset? I am still struggling to visualize how to sew it and hope that it will become clearer once I start the sewing. Many thanks.
ReplyDeleteI bought and returned this book because the style is not quite my taste, but this one sure does look good on you. Love the green.
ReplyDeleteI got this book a while ago but have yet to make any of the projects... I love how you altered this dress! The only bit I wasn't crazy about was the elastic waist, but your version is super inspiring and beautiful! You're very talented! xo!
ReplyDeleteWhat an amazingly cute dress. Now I'm inspired to buy the book.
ReplyDeleteThe green crepe de chine is amazing on you! And the slight changes you made to the pattern really work for your body shape, thanks for the review!
ReplyDeleteI saw this book in the bookstore and spent a good bit of time poring over the included projects and ultimately left it there. I have one Twinkle by Wenlan dress that I love, but didn't get the same vibe from the patterns.
Wow. That dress is gorgeous and you look lovely in it. Great colour.
ReplyDeleteCheryl, here are a couple photos of the underarm gussets. Hope that helps!

Gorgeous! The fabric is beautiful, and I like the color much better than the gray/silver shown in the book. Your pattern alterations are spot on, too!
ReplyDeleteBeautiful dress! Love the changes you made, too. Thanks for the thorough book review!
ReplyDeleteAwesome dress with very interesting design details. I like your changes, too.
ReplyDeleteReally cute! And your hair is funky too! If you like the Twinkle sews book, I'd check out the Twinkle knitting books too.
ReplyDeleteYour dress is beautiful, but then everything you do is! The Twinkle books sounds really interesting, but the printing (particularly the "middle size") is very off-putting. I don't understand why all the sizes weren't printed. Would it be that much more expensive to produce? Puzzling.
ReplyDeleteLove your "productions" and look forward to your posts.
I like the change you made to the elastic waistline...you ended up with a much better looking dress which is very pretty on you! I understand the attraction to the book but the amount of paper needed to print a pattern out ~ WOW!
ReplyDeletebeautiful beautiful dress - I just love that neckline. I agree it looks much nicer without the elasticated waist
ReplyDeleteThanks so much for the before and after. I have the book and am making some tops from it first to work out the sizing challenges, but the dress is on my list and I have to say that I like it so much better without the elastic that I'm probably going to do that too. I had already decided that I'm not going to do the bubble.
ReplyDeleteThanks for these explanations, I was having this dress on my mind, and never saw a finished version on the net. Yours is great, so feminine. I prefer the elasticated waistband though.
ReplyDeleteI just found your blog. I love this dress! I adore the green colour and you look amazing!
ReplyDeletePretty! I am checking out reviews on this dress and saw yours. Love the colour you chose, it is stunning!
ReplyDeleteI am so glad I found your blog. You have impeccable sewing skills with an incredible sense of style. The bow tie front dress is so stylist and sophisticated. Also the Vogue 8385 vest you made is absolutely gorgeous. I immediately went looking, but it's OOP and I can't even find it on Ebay. Drats and double drats. Keep up the good work and I look forward to your next post.
ReplyDeleteNo kidding those gussets are a PAIN!! Trying to make this dress for my daughter for Christmas.
ReplyDeleteReady to tear my hair out!! And I AM an experienced sewer. One more try. But I think I am going to draft a whole piece using the gussets together to sew under the arm. Wish me luck!
